Bafang motors
Bafang, one of the world's leading manufacturers of drive systems and components for e-mobility, has been developing solutions for electric vehicles since 2003. Motors from their production can be found on a wide portfolio of Czech and foreign manufacturers, from affordable touring e-bikes to comfortable city and touring bikes to MTBs for demanding conditions, including full-suspension ones. Here we look at the most used models, their parameters, areas of application and their comparison
Bafang M300

Quiet and economical are the main advantages of this mid-drive motor. It is a model with a frequency sensor, so the output power of the motor is regulated by the pedaling frequency (cadence) compared to all other mid-drive motors with a torsion sensor. Its principle makes it most suitable for city and touring e-bikes, where the emphasis is on simplicity and the ability to use the motor as much as possible.
The motor weighs 3.6 kg, has a nominal power of 250 W and a maximum torque of 80 Nm.

Bafang M400

The most common of all mid-drive electric motors, which can be found on more affordable electric bikes with "reasonable equipment". The motor is characterized by a relatively robust construction, but quiet and powerful performance. It seems a bit dull when riding, compared to more expensive competitors it has a longer torsion sensor delay and more noticeable resistance when pedaling without assistance, so it is best suited for not very demanding tourist riding, including light terrain. In more difficult terrain its slightly rough performance can be a limitation. Its big advantage is its price, durability, relatively undemanding service interventions and availability of spare parts.
The motor weighs 3.9 kg, has a nominal power of 250 W, a peak power of 700 W and a maximum torque of 85 Nm.

Bafang M410

This is a new product introduced for the 2023 season, a facelift of the M400 model that some manufacturers will install on their models. It has a stated weight of 3.4 kg, a nominal power of 250 W, a peak power of 700 W and a maximum torque of 80 Nm. For a more detailed evaluation, it is necessary to wait until spring.

Bafang M500

Probably the second most widespread of all mid-drive electric motors. Introduced for the 2019 season with the aim of filling the gap between the "cheaper" M400 variant and premium Bosch or Yamaha motors. It is a quiet and powerful electric motor in a pretty slim body with an acceptable weight. The driving performance is smooth, quite precise and stands out with its high torque of 95 Nm. It can best use its potential in the ideal cadence range (60-80 rpm), outside this interval it loses power and precision compared to more expensive competitors. Its advantages still include the price, the possibility of software adjustment for a sharper or more economical ride, the availability of spare parts and relatively simple service interventions.
The motor weighs 3.4 kg, has a nominal power of 250 W, a peak power of 700 W and a maximum torque of 95 Nm.

The Bafang M510 motor is a facelift of the M500 model introduced for the 2023 season (the first models appeared at the end of summer 2022). Compared to its predecessor, the weight has been reduced by almost 500 grams and the cadence range in which the motor delivers optimal performance has been expanded, with the rider receiving support even at a cadence of 120 rpm, an area where even more expensive competitors are already lagging behind.
The motor weighs 3.0 kg, has a nominal power of 250 W, a peak power of 700 W and a maximum torque of 95 Nm.
